Our Programs

At WiWSA, we believe that the seeds of innovation and empowerment are planted early. The Mentor a Learner for a Day program gives high school and tertiary students an opportunity to shadow women leaders in the waste management sector.

Through this hands-on exposure, learners gain valuable insights into career opportunities, the importance of environmental sustainability, and the real-life challenges of the industry. Mentors serve as role models, inspiring the next generation to consider careers in green entrepreneurship and waste management.

Goal: To inspire learners, bridge the gap between classroom knowledge and industry experience, and nurture future leaders in sustainability.

How it works: Learners are paired with experienced mentors for a day of job-shadowing at a partnering wase company. They observe operations, ask questions, and explore career pathways in waste management. Schools, communities, and industry partners nominate learners and mentors to participate.

South Africa generates thousands of tons of electronic waste each year, much of which ends up in landfills, causing environmental harm. Our E-Waste Annual Collection Drive mobilizes communities to safely collect, recycle, and repurpose electronic waste.

The program not only raises awareness about proper e-waste disposal but also creates opportunities for women-led enterprises specializing in electronics recycling. By turning waste into value, we reduce pollution, promote circular economy practices, and support women entrepreneurs at the forefront of green innovation.

Goal: To reduce e-waste pollution while empowering women-owned businesses to lead sustainable recycling initiatives.

How it works: WiWSA sets up collection points across participating communities. Residents drop off old electronics, which are then sorted, safely dismantled, and processed by recycling businesses. The initiative is supported by sponsors and recycling partners to ensure impact and scale.

WiWSA understands that many young women in waste-related fields struggle to transition from education to employment. Our Graduate Placement Program bridges this gap by linking recent graduates to internships, entry-level positions, and project opportunities with industry partners. This program ensures graduates gain practical experience, professional networks, and career growth opportunities, while employers benefit from skilled and passionate women ready to make an impact in the sector.

How it works: Graduates apply through WiWSA’s platform and are matched with host organizations. Companies commit to structured placements, offering real workplace exposure. WiWSA monitors progress, ensuring both graduates and employers receive maximum value.

In practice: Graduates undergo an initial orientation to prepare them for workplace expectations. Employers provide mentorship and performance feedback during the placement period. At the end, participants receive a completion certificate and are assisted with either full-time placement or business incubation opportunities.

Skills development is at the heart of WiWSA’s mission. Our Training and Workshops series equips women with both technical and business skills relevant to waste management, entrepreneurship, and sustainability. Workshops cover a range of topics, including waste sorting and recycling, environmental compliance, financial literacy, leadership development, and innovation in waste-to-resource solutions.

How it works: Sessions are hosted in-person and online to reach women nationwide. Expert facilitators lead practical, interactive workshops tailored to different experience levels. Participants receive certificates and ongoing access to learning resources.

Long-term empowerment requires consistent support and guidance. Our 12-Month Mentorship Program pairs aspiring women entrepreneurs and professionals with seasoned mentors in the waste industry. Over the course of a year, participants benefit from personalized guidance, business coaching, networking opportunities, and access to resources that help them navigate challenges and scale their impact.

How it works: Participants are matched with mentors based on their career or business goals. They engage in structured monthly sessions, group forums, and networking events. WiWSA provides progress tracking and resources to ensure measurable growth throughout the year.
